#ThrowbackThursday Shrigley Castle… 🏰 Did you know - there used to be a Castle in the grounds of Shrigley Hall! Known to the locals as ‘Edward III Castle’, no-one is sure whether it was indeed ancient (i.e dating back to the reign of Edward III - 1327-77) or a folly built in the late 18th or early 19th century as was the trend by wealthy landowners What we do know though, is that it was demolished, and the stones removed by the Salesians in the 1930/40s. Both local children, and the students played in the ruins, so was deemed unsafe Only one picture of it is in existence, and we’re pretty sure that it was sited on top of the hill to the right of the 4th green on the golf course (circled in red on the map). It would have enjoyed a fabulous view of the valley below. Positioned to keep an eye out for enemy invaders perhaps? If any of our followers have any recollection or stories about the Castle, we’d love to hear them
